It all started with the 2009 recession. After a 15-year run in the corporate world, I found myself unexpectedly let go and at a crossroads. Rather than dwell on the loss, I enrolled in culinary school, chasing a new dream without knowing where it might lead.
While studying, I began making empanadas for friends, family, and local merchants. A few catering gigs followed, and then came what I thought was my big break: a partnership with a trendy neighborhood bar. It didn’t last, but it lit a spark. I realized I wanted to build something of my own.
After earning my culinary degree, I gained experience in professional kitchens, but my heart wasn’t in it. I craved independence. I was hungry to create, to serve, and to build a business that reflected my passion. One day, while browsing job listings, I stumbled across an ad: “Be your own boss. Start a business in the farmers market industry.” I thought, Why not?
Farmers markets were booming, so I dove in. First selling someone else’s products, learning the ropes, and soaking up every lesson. Season by season, I grew. By 2013, Empanada Lady had become a household name across local markets, known for bold Caribbean flavors and unforgettable comfort food. Our booth became the place to be, thanks to our amazing customers.
This is just the beginning. The journey has been incredible, and we’re excited for what’s next. Thank you for welcoming us into your homes and traditions. We’re honored to keep serving you—one empanada at a time.
